Theatre Up-close

This is where I find my calling, my passion, what I am born to do: Acting.

It has been quite some time since I came back to where I started my journey. Theatre – The journey on stage started with playing the character of Balmiki in Rabindranath Tagore’s, Balmiki Prathibha under the direction of Smt. Alokananda Roy, my mentor. In 2008, due to some personal reason I had to leave theatre and started exploring other sections, more commercial section of acting.

I worked in a couple movies and it is during lockdown, that I consider accepting the offer to play the role of Macbeth in Mukhoshtantra, a pastiche of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a play produced by my theatre workshop, Kolahal, directed by my good friend Prajna Dutta, along with other talented Actors. On 4th April, Mukhoshtantra performed live on stage at Rabindra Macha, Kolkata and it was a mind blowing experience. The excitement made me feel like my first time on stage. The adrenaline was pumping through my veins and I’m proud to say that the play was a success. A lot of people came to visit and it warmed my heart to witness that people still loved theatre even in the 21st century.

Theatre is the most remarkable art of life. It is a collaborate art combining different people into one solid group. They work together harmoniously in order to portray a certain idea, concept, or piece of art. Theatre deals with various forms of emotions and commonly leaves a trace or stimulate sentiments on the audience. The mind plays a big role in theatre, for the art lies within our imagination. Our mind stimulates many different types of strong emotions such as power, anger, joy, and more. These intangible feelings created by our mind, are the reason why theatre the most noteworthy.

I feel overwhelmed and satisfied to accomplish such an act with precision. Hope the audience loved watching us as much as we loved performing. I would love to know the comments of the ones who watched the play live on stage.
